Japan grab the bronze medal at Women’s U23
Tijuana, Mexico, October 12, 2013 – Japan captured the bronze
medal of the inaugural FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship Open
following a 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-11, 25-19) victory over United
States at the Baja California High Performance Center on
Saturday night.
For the last two sets of the contest, it was a marvelous
exhibition from the Japanese side with a combination of defence
and exciting fast offence.
Yurie Nabeya and Saori Takahashi were the main offensive weapons
for Japan as they finished with 16 points apiece while Sarina
Koga added 13 around the excellent performance from setter.

Turkey finish in fifth place
Tijuana, Mexico, October 12, 2013 - Turkey finished their
participation in the fifth place after a victory over Italy in
straight sets on Saturday.
The team coached by Mehme Bedestenliouglu won by scores of
25-17, 25-20, 25-22 after 1 hour and 11 minutes of action at the
Baja California High Performance Center.
Turkish captain Gözde Yilmaz scored 15 points, while Seyma Ercan
finished with 13 and Guc Ezgi had 11 tallies. For Italy Laura
Partenio and Anna Nicoletti scored 11 apiece. Block and service
were key for Turkey after finishing with a 12-6 in block kills.
Individually Asli Kalac and Nur Özge Yurtagülen were the top
blockers with 4 and 3 kills.

Tijuana, Mexico, October 12, 2013 - Brazil finished in seventh
place at FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship after a 3-1 victory
against Germany on Saturday 25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 25-15. The
captains of both teams finished as top scorers of the match that
lasted 1 hour and 42 minutes at the High Performance
Center. Ellen Braga tallied 18 points for Brazil (including 5
blocks). She was followed by Glauciele Silva, who recorded 13

China beat Japan to play for the title
Tijuana, Mexico, October 11, 2013 – China beat Japan in straight
sets (27-25, 26-24, 25-13) and will play against Dominican
Republic for the gold medal of the FIVB Women’s U23 World
Championship Open at Baja California High Performance Center.
The first two sets were a real battle between the two Asian
teams but the third set was a one-way street in favor of China,
the only undefeated team in the competition.
Liu Yanhan topped the scoring charts of China with 18 points,
including three blocks, while Wang Qi and Yang Zhou charted 12
and 11 points, respectively.
Sarina Koga was the only Japanese player to finish with double.

Dominicans hit big blow to USA, go after gold medal
Tijuana, Mexico, October 12, 2013 – The Dominican Republic
advanced to the gold medal match of the FIVB Women’s U23 World
Championship Open following a straight-set (25-21, 25-21, 27-25)
victory over the United States at the Baja California High
Performance Center on Friday.
The athletic Dominicans dominated the match with their powerful
spikes and good overall defence and now are waiting for the
winner of the contest between China and Japan.
Brayelin Martinez led the winners with 21 points, followed by
Yonkaira Peña who tallied 11 points.

Italy beat Brazil in straight sets
Tijuana, Mexico, October 11, 2013.- Italy defeated Brazil in
three sets 25-13, 26-24, 25-22 and will play against Turkey on
Saturday for the fifth place.
Anna Nicoletti was the top scorer of the match with a total of
20 points, while Cristina Chirichella finished with 13. Laura
Partenio tallied 11 and captain Alessia Genari and Raphaela
Folie scored 8 apiece.
Brazil’s top scorer was Gabriella Souza while Mara Leao and
Francynne Jacintho finished with 8 apiece. The Italian team
coached by Luca Cristofani won also the block and serve battle
with a 15-11 ballance in their favor.

Dominican Republic capture first place in Pool A

clinched the top place in Pool A of the FIVB Women’s U23 World
Championship Open following a straight-set (25-15, 25-21, 25-21)
victory over Mexico on Wednesday. With a 4-1 win-loss record
that included four victories y 3-0 or 3-1 score and one 2-3
defeat, the Dominicans collected 13 points, one point better
than Japan, winners of their five matches, including three by
3-2 scores, valid for two points. In Friday’s semifinals they
will meet their NORCECA rivals United States while Japan will

Turkey still in contention for semifinal berth

important points to stay in contention for the semifinal round

China extend winning record to 4-0, after a five setter win over
USA
Mexicali, Mexico, October 8, 2013 - China extended their
undefeated record to 4-0 in Pool B after a five setter victory
over USA (25-15, 18-25, 14-25, 25-19, 5-15).
Yanhan Liu scored 24 points for China. She was followed by Qi
Wang with 18, while Zhou Yang scored 15 and Xinwei Gu 12.
Gina Mancuso had another 20 plus points performance for the
American team. The American captain closed with 25 points and
three aces to be the best scorer of the match.

Martinez and Rodriguez lead Dominican Victory over Italy
Tijuana, Mexico, October 8, 2013 – Brayelin Martinez and
Jeoselyna Rodriguez each collected 22 points in leading the
Dominican Republic to a convincing 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-16,
25-12) victory over Italy at Baja California High Performance
Center on Tuesday.
After a very close battle for the first two sets, the Dominicans
played text-book volleyball the rest of the way displaying a
festival of serves and blocks.
It was the third victory against one loss for the Dominican
Republic good for second place in Pool A with 10 points.

Cubans get their
first victory at U23 World Championship
Mexicali, México,
October 8 2013.- Cuba won their first match at FIVB Womens U23
World Championship after defeatig Kenya in three sets (25-19,
25-23, 25-21). Rosana Giel scored
13 points and Alena Rojas 10 for Cuba. But Kenya had three
players with double digit despite this result. The Africans played
their best volleyball at the tournament and showed no fear
against the Caribbean players that had a total of 8 team aces
against 7 by their rivals. Beatriz Vilches aced three times and
Giel twice. Violet Makuto and
Eglay Kulova closed with 12 unidades apiece and captain
Gaudencia Makokha finished with 10.

Italy capture first victory in Pool A
Tijuana, Mexico, October 7, 2013 – Italy beat Mexico 25-19,
25-15, 25-20 to capture their first victory in Pool A after
suffering two painful five-set losses.
Laura Partenio had a match-high 19 points to lead the winners
while Alessia Gennari finished with 10 points as the only other
player of the winners to reach double digits. Andrea Rangel and
Claudia Rios finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively, for
the Mexican squad, which saw their record dropping to 0-3.
Italy held a 7-4 advantage in the blocking charts but Mexico
dominated 7-4 in service winners. Italy made 8 unforced errors
to 22 committed by Mexico.
Argentina dominated the first set despite the fighting spirit of
Mexico. The South Americans led 8-4 and 16-12 at the stops.

Mexicali, Mexico, October 7 2013 - China had another dominant
performance at Mexicali State Auditorium. The Chinese team beat
Cuba in straight sets 25-14, 25-21, 25-23.
Yanhan Lu scored 16 points for China while Xiaoya Zhang closed
with 10. Qi Wang scored 9. Cuba’s best weapon was Rosanna Giel,

Republic in five sets (15-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 15-9) to take

were keys for the victory as they were able neutralized the

Americans stay undefeated, beat Germany in five sets
MEXICALI, Mexico, October 7, 2013.- The United States kept an
undefeated record in Pool B after a 3-2 win over Germany (25-15,

Americans are 3-0 at the tournament. Outside Hitter and captain
